How to Build a McDonald’s Meal Under 500 Calories

A McDonald’s meal can fit beneath a 500-calorie limit, but the exact total depends on the items, portion sizes and customisations you choose. A simple main, a lighter side and a low-calorie drink are often the easiest starting points.

Check the current figures first

Menu recipes, serving sizes and calorie information can change, so check the figures shown by McDonald’s when you order. Regional menus may also differ, which means a combination listed elsewhere might not match what is available to you.

Treat 500 calories as the total budget for everything in the meal, including sides, drinks, dips and extras. Add each item to your food log before ordering so you can see how much room remains.

Start with one straightforward main

Choose a single burger, wrap or other main whose listed calories leave space for anything else you want. Simpler options are generally easier to track because extra cheese, larger portions and creamy sauces can quickly raise the total.

Customising can help, but record what you actually order rather than relying on the standard entry. Removing a sauce or topping may change the total, although the exact difference depends on the portion used and the nutrition information provided.

Be selective with sides and drinks

Once you have chosen the main, decide whether a side fits the remaining calories. A smaller side may be easier to include than a larger portion, while skipping the side leaves more flexibility for the main.

Water and drinks listed with very few or no calories preserve more of the budget for food. If you prefer another drink, count its full serving in the meal rather than treating it as separate.

Watch the easy-to-miss additions

Dipping sauces, dressings, cheese and other add-ons still count, even when they arrive in a small container or are added at the counter. Check each one separately and include only the extras that matter most to you.

Save the finished combination in your tracker if you expect to order it again. Recheck the menu information from time to time, as ingredients, portions and published values may be updated.
