How Long Will It Take You to Run a 5K?

Your likely 5K time depends mainly on the pace you can maintain across five kilometres. Recent tracking data can give you a practical estimate without turning it into a promise.

Start with your usual pace

Look at a few recent runs that felt steady rather than unusually easy or hard. Your average pace over a similar distance is a more useful guide than your fastest short burst.

To estimate your finish time, multiply your minutes per kilometre by five. For example, a pace of six minutes per kilometre gives an estimated 5K time of 30 minutes, while seven minutes per kilometre gives 35 minutes.

Use the most relevant runs

A short, quick run may make your estimate too optimistic because holding that pace becomes harder over a longer distance. A recent run close to five kilometres, completed on similar ground, usually offers a better comparison.

If your tracked run included walking, traffic stops or long pauses, decide whether those are likely during your 5K. Use elapsed time if you want a door-to-door estimate, or moving time if you expect an uninterrupted route.

Allow for the route and the day

Hills, uneven ground, sharp turns and crowded paths can all affect your pace. Wind, heat, sleep and how rested you feel may also make the same distance take a different amount of time.

Treat your calculation as a sensible range rather than an exact finish time. The size of that range depends on how consistent your recent pacing has been and how closely the planned route matches your tracked runs.

Plan a pace you can sustain

Starting much faster than your usual pace can make the later kilometres feel harder. A steady opening pace gives you room to assess your effort and speed up near the end if you still feel comfortable.

If you plan to alternate running and walking, include both in your estimate rather than counting only the running sections. Track a practice session using the same pattern, then use its average pace to calculate a more realistic 5K time.
