Questions about Shrimp salad

What’s the difference between prawn salad and prawn cocktail?

Prawn cocktail is usually served in a glass or dish over lettuce, with prawns coated in Marie Rose sauce. Prawn salad is a broader name: it might have a light dressing, or be served in a sandwich or on a jacket potato.

How do you make a simple prawn salad sandwich?

Drain cooked, peeled prawns well and pat them dry, then fold them through a little mayonnaise with lemon juice and black pepper. Pile onto buttered bread with crisp lettuce; drying the prawns first helps stop the bread going soggy.

Do you need to cook prawns before putting them in a salad?

Ready-to-eat cooked prawns can go straight into a salad once drained. If using raw prawns, cook them until steaming hot throughout, then cool them quickly and keep them chilled before adding.

How long does prawn salad keep in the fridge?

Keep it covered in a fridge set at 5°C or below, and eat it within two days. Don’t leave it out for more than two hours; the Food Standards Agency advises keeping chilled food cold and refrigerating leftovers promptly.

Can you freeze prawn salad?

Freezing the finished salad is not recommended: mayonnaise can separate and lettuce turns limp when thawed. You can freeze plain prawns if their packaging allows it, then thaw them in the fridge and mix the salad fresh.

What goes well with prawn salad?

Serve it with brown bread, crisp lettuce or a jacket potato. For a classic prawn cocktail, spoon prawns in Marie Rose sauce over shredded lettuce and serve with lemon wedges.

Can you use frozen prawns for prawn salad?

Yes. Thaw cooked prawns in the fridge, drain them thoroughly and pat dry before mixing with dressing; excess thawing liquid can make the salad watery. Keep them chilled while you prepare the rest.

Are prawns in prawn salad an allergen?

Yes. Prawns are crustaceans, which are one of the 14 allergens that must be declared in food sold in the UK. If you have a crustacean allergy, avoid the salad and check for cross-contact when food is prepared.
