What VO₂ Max Means for Your Fitness

VO₂ max describes how well your body can take in and use oxygen when exercise becomes demanding. It is one way to track aerobic fitness, rather than a score of your overall health or effort.

What VO₂ max measures

VO₂ max is the greatest amount of oxygen your body can use during intense exercise. Oxygen helps your muscles release energy, so a higher reading generally indicates a greater capacity for sustained aerobic work.

The result is often shown as millilitres of oxygen used per kilogram of body weight per minute. Adjusting for body weight makes comparisons more meaningful, although body size, age, sex, genetics and training background can all affect the number.

How it is measured

A direct test usually involves exercising progressively harder while wearing a mask that measures the gases you breathe in and out. The effort continues until oxygen use stops rising or the test reaches its planned endpoint, so this method is normally carried out in a supervised setting.

Fitness watches and exercise machines may provide an estimate instead. They commonly use information such as heart rate, pace, power and personal details, which means the result can vary between devices and activities.

What changes the reading

Regular aerobic exercise can improve the body's ability to deliver oxygen and help muscles use it. Running, cycling, swimming and brisk walking can all contribute when the duration and effort suit the individual.

Fatigue, temperature, altitude, hydration and the type of exercise can influence a test or estimate. For useful comparisons, look at the longer-term trend and try to measure under similar conditions rather than focusing on one reading.

How it fits with food tracking

VO₂ max and food tracking describe different parts of the picture. Your food log records energy and nutrients consumed, while VO₂ max reflects aerobic capacity and does not tell you exactly how many calories you burn.

Carbohydrate and fat provide fuel during aerobic activity, while protein supports the maintenance and repair of body tissues. Your preferred intake depends on your body, training and goals, so use VO₂ max as a fitness trend rather than a rule for changing your calorie target.
