How to Do the Incline Dumbbell Press with Control
The incline dumbbell press is a chest exercise performed on a bench set at a gentle upward angle. Good positioning and a controlled range of movement matter more than lifting the heaviest weight available.
Set up the bench and weights
Adjust the bench to a low or moderate incline rather than placing it almost upright. Sit with a dumbbell resting on each thigh, keeping your feet flat and firmly planted.
Use your legs to help guide the dumbbells towards shoulder level as you lean back onto the bench. Keep your head, upper back and hips supported, with a natural curve in your lower back.
Find a steady starting position
Hold the dumbbells just outside your upper chest with your palms facing forwards or slightly inwards. Keep your wrists straight and position your elbows a little below shoulder height rather than flaring them directly out to the sides.
Draw your shoulder blades gently back and down against the bench. Brace your middle as if preparing for a firm tap, while keeping your feet pressed into the floor.
Press and lower with control
Press both dumbbells upwards until your arms are extended without forcefully locking your elbows. The weights may move slightly towards each other, but they do not need to touch at the top.
Lower the dumbbells slowly along the same path until they return beside your upper chest. Stop where you can maintain stable shoulders, straight wrists and firm contact with the bench, as a comfortable range depends on the person.
Choose a manageable effort
Select a weight that lets you repeat the movement without bouncing, twisting or shortening each repetition. If your hips lift, your wrists fold back or one arm races ahead, reduce the weight or end the set.
Breathe in as you lower the dumbbells and breathe out as you press them away. Record the weight, repetitions and bench setting alongside your usual food tracking so you can compare sessions without relying on memory.
