How to Do the Leg Press with Good Form

The leg press is a machine-based exercise that works the legs while supporting your upper body. Good setup and a controlled range of movement matter more than loading the machine heavily.

Set up the machine

Sit with your back and hips resting firmly against the pads. Place your feet about hip- to shoulder-width apart on the platform, with your heels flat and your toes pointing in roughly the same direction as your knees.

Adjust the seat so you can bend your knees comfortably without your lower back or hips lifting away from the pad. Check how the safety handles and stops work before adding resistance, as machines can differ.

Press with control

Release the safety mechanism and lower the platform slowly by bending your knees. Keep your feet planted, your knees tracking over your toes and your head and back supported.

Push through your whole foot to move the platform away. Finish with your legs almost straight, but do not forcefully lock your knees, then begin the next controlled lowering phase.

Choose a suitable range and load

Lower the platform only as far as you can while keeping your hips and lower back against the pad. A deeper movement is not automatically better if it causes your pelvis to curl or your heels to rise.

Choose a load that lets you repeat the same smooth movement without bouncing, rushing or shortening the range. The right number of repetitions and sets depends on your experience, goals and wider training programme.

Avoid common form problems

Do not let your knees collapse inwards or allow the weight to drop quickly towards you. Avoid pressing on your thighs with your hands, lifting your hips or loading more weight than you can control.

Breathe in as you lower the platform and breathe out as you press it away, without holding your breath for longer than feels comfortable. Stop if you feel sharp or sudden pain, and ask a qualified fitness professional to check your setup if the movement does not feel secure.
