Questions about Spinach

How long should you steam spinach?

Put rinsed leaves in a steamer over simmering water for about 2–3 minutes, until just wilted. Drain well before serving.

How do you stop steamed spinach turning watery?

Drain it as soon as it wilts, then press it gently with the back of a spoon to squeeze out excess water. This is especially useful before adding it to pasta, a pie or an omelette.

What goes well with steamed spinach?

Serve it alongside fish, eggs or a roast, or stir it into pasta, a curry or a dhal just before serving. A little lemon juice or grated nutmeg works well with its earthy flavour.

How should you store leftover steamed spinach?

Cool it and put it in the fridge within 1–2 hours. The Food Standards Agency advises eating refrigerated leftovers within 48 hours and reheating them only once, until steaming hot throughout.

Can you freeze steamed spinach?

Yes. Cool it, squeeze out as much water as you can, then freeze it in small portions; add it straight from frozen to soups, sauces or curries.

How much cooked spinach counts as a portion?

An 80 g portion of cooked vegetables counts as one of your 5 A Day under NHS guidance. Weigh it after steaming, as the leaves shrink considerably during cooking.

Is steamed spinach high in fibre?

Yes. Steamed spinach is high in fibre, with 9 g per 100 g.
