Calori vs YAZIO: two different ways to track
A polished European counter with fasting and recipes, compared with a tracker built around flexible logging, shared planning and a coach that remembers.
YAZIO is a polished European calorie counter with a particularly visible presence in Spanish-language app stores. Its clear diary, barcode scanner, fasting tools and large recipe collection make it an easy app to understand. It has also added AI photo logging, so it now covers much more than manual food search. The fair question is not whether YAZIO works, but which parts you want included without moving to the paid plan.
Calori starts from a different idea. Every account can photograph a plate, speak, write a sentence, scan a barcode or photograph a nutrition label, with a daily allowance for the AI methods. A photo comes back as separate, editable foods rather than a single total. The same account also holds recipes, a weekly plan, a shared shopping list, health trackers and Calori AI, a coach that remembers your history.
This comparison looks at both apps category by category: food data, meal logging, planning, progress and the everyday experience. YAZIO is stronger if you want a mature fasting programme and a ready-made recipe library. Calori is broader across ways to log, household tools and places to use the app. Where a YAZIO feature depends on the paid plan, the table says so.
1. Food database and accuracy
YAZIO has a broad food database with strong European coverage, and its free diary supports both name search and barcode scanning. That is useful for supermarket products, especially in the markets where the app is well established. Public foods can be contributed by users, while editing those shared entries is reserved for the paid plan. As with any community catalogue, it is sensible to compare an unfamiliar result with the packaging before saving it.
Its photo tool uses AI to identify ingredients, estimate portions and build an editable meal. YAZIO itself describes that result as a rough estimate and asks people to review it. The ingredients and quantities can be adjusted individually, which is a meaningful strength. The important plan difference is that photo recognition, once offered more widely, now belongs to YAZIO's paid plan; manual search and the barcode scanner remain the free routes.
Calori combines its own catalogue with Open Food Facts and USDA data for packaged products. For a cooked plate, Calori AI separates the visible foods and returns calories, macros, vitamins and minerals for each item. Nothing is locked as a final answer: you can change the portion, replace an ingredient or remove an item. Calori does not claim that a camera is more accurate; its advantage is making the estimate transparent and easy to correct.
2. Ease of use and logging meals
YAZIO keeps the familiar calorie-counter flow: choose a meal, search for a food, scan a barcode or reuse something recent. Its iPhone tools also support Siri commands for adding food or water. AI photo logging is quicker for a mixed plate and lets you edit recognised ingredients, but it needs the paid plan. YAZIO's official materials do not present a general free-form sentence parser that turns an ordinary description into a complete meal.
In Calori, photo, voice, sentence, barcode and nutrition-label logging all sit behind the same + button. Every method is on the free plan, with a daily allowance for the AI routes. Photograph a plate and Calori splits it into editable items, including a half-eaten plate when you want to record what was actually consumed. Speaking and typing use the same parser, so a natural description becomes separate foods rather than a note.
The distinction matters most on busy days. YAZIO remains straightforward when you already know the product or repeat familiar meals, and its barcode flow is a genuine free-plan strength. Calori reduces the work when the meal is homemade, shared or difficult to name. Neither approach removes the need to check portions. Calori simply gives you more input methods before asking you to search a catalogue by hand.
Calori keeps photo, voice, sentence, barcode and label logging together on the free plan.
3. Planning and personalised recommendations
YAZIO is the stronger traditional choice if you want a ready-made recipe collection and a well-known intermittent fasting tracker. Its paid plan opens the recipe library, tailored meal plans, fasting plans, a smart shopping list and deeper nutrition detail. The recipes are designed to work neatly with its diary, which is convenient if you prefer choosing from a curated collection rather than building a personal library from links you find elsewhere.
Calori takes the personal-library route. Save a recipe from any website or from a TikTok, Instagram or YouTube video, then place it on the free weekly planner. Ingredients move into a shopping list that can be shared live with your household. Calori Chef can suggest dishes from your goals and what is in the pantry, with a daily allowance on the free plan. Menu Rank reads a restaurant menu and ranks dishes against your goals.
Calori AI connects those tools to your own history. It can answer questions about the diary, remember preferences and explain patterns without making you repeat the context each time. Every account has a daily message allowance; Premium makes that allowance generous and uses the best model. Premium+ adds the live voice conversation in Calori Live. YAZIO offers guidance and an AI support assistant, but not an equivalent diary-aware coach or live voice conversation at the time of writing.
Choose YAZIO for a fixed recipe library; choose Calori to build one from any link or video.
4. Progress tracking and metrics
Both apps cover the core progress loop: calories, macros, weight, water, steps and visual trends. YAZIO connects with Apple Health and Health Connect, and it also supports selected fitness services. Its free plan handles the everyday basics. The paid plan adds more nutrient detail, long-term insights, body measurements, notes or mood and the fuller fasting experience. For someone focused on food, weight and a fasting window, that is a coherent set of tools.
Calori places fasting, blood pressure from a photo of the home monitor, steps, sleep and more than twenty-five other trackers beside the diary, all on the free plan. You pin the records you use and hide the rest. Apple Health and Health Connect sync are included, while trends connect food with the rest of the day. Progress photos stay on the mobile device rather than being uploaded for analysis.
The difference is less about drawing another chart than about what happens next. YAZIO provides a polished progress view and offers deeper long-term analysis in its paid plan. Calori keeps full tracker history and CSV export free, then uses Premium for the AI layer: reports that explain changes, patterns and possible next steps. Premium adds interpretation and the best model; it does not sell access to records you already created.
5. Interface and overall experience
YAZIO feels mature and focused. The diary is easy to recognise, its fasting experience is prominent, and its recipe presentation is polished. It runs on iPhone and Android, offers widgets and has an Apple Watch app. The trade-off is a visible boundary between free and paid features. The free tier includes adverts, while removing them is one of the paid benefits. Regular prompts to upgrade may matter if you want a quiet free experience.
YAZIO also has Buddies, which lets connected users see selected goals, calories, steps, water, fasting details and favourite recipes. That is useful social accountability, but it is not a shared household workspace. There is no shared weekly plan and shopping list for the home, and no dedicated view for a nutritionist or coach to follow the diary. At the time of writing, YAZIO also does not offer a full browser app for logging.
Calori works on iPhone, Android, Apple Watch and the web, with widgets for quick views. There are no adverts on any plan. Friends and private challenges stay separate from the diary, while household sharing covers recipes, meal plans and the shopping list. A nutritionist or coach can connect by invitation. YAZIO is the more established single-person counter; Calori is designed to continue across the computer, the kitchen, the restaurant and the people you choose.

Why consider Calori over YAZIO?
YAZIO is a good fit for someone who wants a polished European calorie counter, a prominent fasting programme and a large ready-made recipe library. Its diary, free barcode scanner and Apple Watch support cover the basics well. The compromise is that photo logging, plans, recipes, fuller trackers and an advert-free experience sit on the paid side.
Calori fits people who want several ways to record a real meal without changing plans: photo, voice, sentence, barcode or label, all with editable items. It then carries that food into imported recipes, a free weekly planner, a shared shopping list, Menu Rank and Calori AI. Premium makes AI generous and uses the best model; your diary and tools remain yours.
Switching does require one extra step because YAZIO does not currently provide a simple file-export button in the app. Request your YAZIO data export, then open Calori and go to Data → Import. Calori can bring the supported history across, so you can start with earlier meals and measurements rather than treating the move as a blank slate.
