Homemade Apple Turnovers Recipe

Delight in these flaky, golden homemade apple turnovers filled with a sweet and spiced apple filling. Using either homemade rough puff pastry or thawed store-bought puff pastry, these turnovers are a perfect balance of buttery crust and tender, cinnamon-kissed apples, finished with a glossy egg wash and an optional drizzle of salted caramel for extra decadence.
Ingredients
- 1 lb. homemade rough puff pastry or store-bought frozen & thawed puff pastry (2 sheets)
- 2 cups (240g) peeled & diced apples (about 2 medium apples)
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup (100g) granulated or brown sugar (use either)
- 1 large egg
- 1 Tablespoon (15ml) milk (any kind)
- Optional: 1/2 cup (145g) salted caramel, for drizzling
Instructions
- 1
Prepare the Pastry: If using homemade rough puff pastry, roll it out on a lightly floured surface to about 1/8 inch thickness. If using store-bought, thaw the puff pastry sheets according to package instructions and lightly roll to even thickness.
- 2
Mix the Filling: In a bowl, combine the peeled and diced apples, cornstarch, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and sugar. Stir thoroughly until the apples are evenly coated, creating a sweet, spiced mixture.
- 3
Assemble the Turnovers: Cut each pastry sheet into 4 equal squares. Spoon a generous amount of the apple filling onto one half of each square, leaving room at the edges to seal.
- 4
Seal the Pastry: Brush the edges of the pastry squares with a little water to help seal. Fold the pastry over to form triangles and press the edges firmly with a fork to seal completely, preventing the filling from leaking during baking.
- 5
Apply Egg Wash: In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and milk. Brush this mixture over the tops of each turnover to give a glossy, golden finish when baked.
- 6
Bake the Turnovers: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Place the turnovers on a parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing them evenly. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.
- 7
Cool and Serve: Remove the turnovers from the oven and let them cool slightly on a wire rack. Optionally, drizzle with salted caramel sauce before serving for an indulgent touch.
