Ingredients

  • 6 large egg yolks
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup mascarpone cheese
  • 1 cup strong brewed coffee, cooled
  • 1/2 cup coffee liqueur (optional)
  • 20-24 ladyfinger cookies
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. 1

Prepare the Custard: In a saucepan, whisk together egg yolks and sugar until pale. Gradually add milk and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until it thickens. Remove from heat and let it cool.

  2. 2

Whip the Cream: In a large bowl, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Gently fold in the mascarpone cheese until well combined.

  3. 3

Combine Mixtures: Fold the cooled egg mixture into the whipped cream mixture. Add vanilla extract and a pinch of salt, mixing gently.

  4. 4

Prepare Coffee Mixture: In a shallow dish, combine the brewed coffee and coffee liqueur. Dip each ladyfinger into the coffee mixture for a few seconds to soak.

  5. 5

Layer the Ingredients: In a rectangular dish, layer half of the soaked ladyfingers. Spread half of the mascarpone mixture over the ladyfingers.

  6. 6

Repeat Layers: Add another layer of soaked ladyfingers followed by the remaining mascarpone mixture. Smooth the top with a spatula.

  7. 7

Chill the Tiramisu: Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight if possible, to allow the flavors to meld.

  8. 8

Add Finishing Touches: Before serving, dust the top with cocoa powder using a fine sieve. Cut into squares and serve chilled.
