Donut Holes

These homemade Donut Holes are golden, fluffy, bite-sized treats tossed in cinnamon sugar or confectioners’ sugar for an easy, irresistible breakfast or sweet snack.
Ingredients
- Coatings:
- 1 cup powdered sugar (plus additional as needed)
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1 1/2-2 tsp ground cinnamon
- Donuts:
- 2-4 cups vegetable oil or peanut oil
- 2 1/4 cups all purpose flour
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1 Tbsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1 cup whole milk
- 4 Tbsp unsalted butter (melted)
- 1 large egg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- warm chocolate and caramel for dipping

In a Dutch oven over medium high heat heat 2-3 inches of oil to 355-365°F.

Prep the Sugar Coatings: In one shallow bowl place 1 cup powdered sugar. In a separate shallow bowl whisk together 1/3 cup granulated sugar with 1 1/2-2 teaspoons ground cinnamon. Set aside.

Make the Donuts: In a medium bowl, use a whisk to sift together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and nutmeg.

In a separate medium bowl, whisk together milk, melted butter, vanilla and egg.

Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until fully moistened.

Use a small cookie or ice cream scoop (about 1 Tablespoon) to drop the batter into the hot oil. fry for 3-4 minutes turning for even browning. Fry until golden brown.

Have nearby a baking sheet pan lined with paper towels and fitted with a wire rack. Remove doughnut holes from the hot oil using a stainless steel spider or slotted spoon to the rack.

While doughnut holes are hot roll half in powdered sugar and half in cinnamon sugar. Roll twice for a heavier coating. Place back onto the wire rack.

Serve immediately with warm chocolate or caramel for dipping, if desired.
