Ingredients

  • 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, divided
  • 1 packet of dry active yeast
  • 1 1/4 cups whole milk
  • 1/4 - 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter flavored shortening ((proken into pieces))
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup salted butter, melted divided ((for brushing))

Instructions

  1. 1

In a large bowl, whisk together 1¼ cups of flour & yeast. Set aside.

  2. 2

In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine milk, sugar, and shortening. Stir constantly until shortening has completely melted. Do not boil.

  3. 3

Remove from heat and let the mixture cool to about 115- 130 F..

  4. 4

Pour the warm milk mixture into the flour mixture.

  5. 5

Add in the egg and mix with a hand mixer on low speed for 1 minute, then increase to high speed for 3 minutes.

  6. 6

Add in the salt and the remaining 2 cups of flour. Stir with a rubber spatula or your hands to mix until a soft dough forms.

  7. 7

Lightly coat a large bowl with vegetable oil, then place the ball of dough inside and turn it once to coat the surface. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.

  8. 8

Remove from the refrigerator & punch down the dough with your fist to release the air.

  9. 9

Spread a thin layer of melted butter (about 1 tablespoon) on the bottom of a 9 X 13 pan. Set aside.

  10. 10

Divide the dough into 25 balls. Press the ball into a circle and brush with melted butter, fold the sides onto each other, and place them in the pan, seam side down. Once all the rolls have been shaped and placed in the pan. Brush the rolls with butter. (see video)

  11. 11

Cover the pan with a thin kitchen towel and let it sit in a warm place for at least 1-1 ½ hours.

  12. 12

    Preheat oven to 400 F.

  13. 13

Bake for 10-14 minutes or until lightly golden. Keep an eye on them after 10 minutes.

  14. 14

As soon as they come out of the oven, brush them with butter.
