📝 Ingredients
- 500 g minced beef
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon chicken bouillon cube (crushed)
- 1/2 small white onion (blended, or 1 teaspoon onion powder)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper
- 2 tablespoons oil (skip if using fatty minced beef)
- 1/2 cup plain yogurt
- 1 cup shredded cabbage
- 1 medium carrot (grated or julienned)
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 2 teaspoons sweet chili sauce ( substitute with 1 teaspoon sugar)
- 2 teaspoons lemon juice
- 3 to 4 pita breads
👨🍳 Instructions
- 1--- For the Beef ---
- 2Add the minced beef to a bowl then season with salt, crushed bouillon cube, blended onion, garlic powder, red pepper, oil, if using lean beef, and yogurt.
- 3Mix very well. The meat will be sticky.
- 4Place some of the beef(about 3 tablespoons) on parchment paper and cover with another sheet.
- 5Roll the beef out thin using a rolling pin, remove the top parchment, then roll or fold the parchment with the beef.
- 6Place the folded beef on a baking tray in a single layer.
- 7Bake in a preheated oven at 400°F or 200°C for about twenty minutes, or until fully cooked.
- 8Rest briefly, unwrap, then gently tear the beef into thin pieces.
- 9Optionally: Return to the oven and Broil or grill for a few minutes to lightly crisp the beef.
- 10--- For the Veggies ---
- 11Remove a couple of outer layers from the cabbage, then cut it in half. Finely shred the cabbage and set aside.
- 12Rinse and peel the carrot, then grate or julienne it. Set aside while you prepare the sauce.
- 13--- For the Sauce ---
- 14Add the mayonnaise, ketchup, cayenne pepper, sweet chili sauce, and lemon juice to a bowl. Mix until smooth. Taste and adjust if needed.
- 15--- To Wrap ---
- 16Gently open the wrap in two and place one half slightly over the other.
- 17Add the cabbage, carrot, shredded beef, and sauce to a bowl. Mix very gently so the beef does not break apart.
- 18Scoop the filling onto the wrap and roll it tightly.
- 19For another option, spread sauce directly in the pita, add the veggies and beef, then drizzle with more sauce before wrapping tightly.
- 20Transfer the shawarma to a heated pan and toast in a dry pan until warm and the edges are sealed.
