BEEF SHAWARMA (NIGERIAN STYLE)

Ingredients
- 1 lb beef ( thinly sliced(see note 1 for slicing tips))
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 beef bouillon cube (crushed)
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon minced garlic
- 1/4 teaspoons Red pepper
- 2 tablespoons oil
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 cup shredded cabbage
- 1 medium carrot (grated )
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 2 teaspoons sweet chili sauce
- 2 teaspoons lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon red pepper or cayenne pepper
- 2 pocket pita breads
- 2 sausages or hotdogs (optional)
Instructions
- 1
Add the beef, salt, bouillon, onion powder, garlic, red pepper, oil, and lemon juice to a bowl. Mix until well combined.
- 2
Heat up a skillet and when its hot, add a little oil and then the beef in a single layer and cook until browned and cooked through. Avoid overcrowding the pan. Cook in batches if necessary.
- 3
When it's cooked, transfer the beef to a plate and allow it to rest for a few minutes.
- 4
If using sausages or hotdogs, cook them in the same pan until lightly browned. Set aside.
- 5
In a small bowl, mix the mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet chili sauce, lemon juice, and red pepper. Mix until smooth and creamy.
- 6
Thinly shred the cabbage and grate or julienne the carrot.
- 7
Add the cooked beef, cabbage, carrot, and some of the sauce to a large bowl. Mix until combined.
- 8
If your pita bread has a pocket, gently separate it into two rounds. If the pita isn’t very fresh, leave it whole to prevent tearing.
- 9
Lay the pita flat on a clean work surface.
- 10
Add some of the beef mixture to the lower third of the bread. If using sausage or hotdogs, place one on top of the filling.
- 11
Fold one side of the bread over the filling, tuck in the bottom edge, then roll tightly.
- 12
Place the shawarma seam-side down in a dry skillet, grill pan, sandwich press, or panini maker.
- 13
Toast for 1 to 2 minutes per side until golden and lightly crisp.
- 14
Slice in half and enjoy.
