Who knew that the secret ingredient to getting crispy (fried-like) chicken wing in the oven is baking powder? This Slow Baked Chicken Wings Recipe is a healthier way to enjoy chicken wings without sacrificing the flavor and/or crispiness. Simply, first bake the wings in a low heat oven and then increase the heat to finish them off. Drizzled with homemade hot sauce, these healthy wings will be the first thing to disappear at your party. Guaranteed.
📝 Ingredients
- 4 pounds chicken wings (pat-dried with paper towels)
- 1 tablespoons baking powder
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup hot sauce (I used Frank's Hot Sauce Original)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon molasses
- 2 cloves of garlic (minced)
- 3-4 carrots (cut into sticks)
- 3-4 celery stalks (cut into sticks)
- 1 cup of blue cheese dip
- 2 tablespoon crumbled blue cheese (optional)
- 1 scallion – green parts only- chopped (optional)
👨🍳 Instructions
- 1Adjust oven racks to upper middle and lower middle positions.
- 2Heat the oven to 250 F degrees.
- 3Place baking powder and salt in large bowl. Add chicken wings. Toss wings and make sure that they are evenly coated with baking powder and salt.
- 4Cover a baking sheet with aluminum foil and set a wire rack in it. Spray it with vegetable oil spray.
- 5Place chicken, skin side down, on a single layer on the wire rack.
- 6Bake wings on lower middle rack for 30 minutes. Turn up the heat to 425 degrees, move it to the upper middle rack. Bake for 45-50 minutes, rotating the sheet half way through the baking to ensure through baking.
- 7Take them out of the oven and let them sit for 5 minutes.
- 8In the mean time, make the hot wing sauce.
- 9Place the hot sauce, butter, and molasses in a small saucepan. Cook, stirring occasionally, in medium heat until simmering, 5-7 minutes. Add garlic and turn the heat down to low. Cook for another 3-4 minutes.
- 10Place wings in a large bowl and add the hot sauce over it. Toss to coat.
- 11Place the blue cheese dip in the middle of a large plate in a bowl. Place the carrot and celery sticks on one side and the wings on the other side.
- 12If preferred, sprinkle them with pieces of crumbled blue cheese and chopped scallions.
- 13Serve immediately while they are still hot.
