These Tavern Sandwiches (also called Loose Meat and Maid Rite Sandwiches) are made with seasoned ground beef and onions cooked low and slow then spooned onto toasted buns.

📝 Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon mustard powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 2 teaspoons black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons worcestershire sauce
  • 1 10.5-oz. can Beef Consommé
  • 12 hamburger buns, toasted

👨‍🍳 Instructions

  1. 1In a large skillet, brown ground beef and onion over medium-high heat until beef is cooked through. Drain fat.
  2. 2Add ground beef mixture and remaining ingredients to a large pot. Bring mixture to a simmer then reduce heat and cook on low, covered, for 4 hours.
  3. 3To serve, scoop meat with a slotted spoon to allow excess broth to drain off and serve on a toasted bun. Serve with dill pickle chips, cheese, yellow mustard or other condiments of choice.
  4. 4In a large skillet, brown ground beef and onion over medium-high heat until beef is cooked through. Drain fat.
  5. 5Add ground beef mixture and remaining ingredients to a crock pot and cook on low for 8 hours or high for 4 hours.
  6. 6To serve, scoop meat with a slotted spoon to allow excess broth to drain off and serve on a toasted bun. Serve with dill pickle chips, cheese, yellow mustard or other condiments of choice.
