Questions about Sweet pickle
What is sweet pickle?
In the UK, sweet pickle is a tangy-sweet condiment of chopped vegetables, usually cucumber, in vinegar. It is spoonable rather than a whole pickled gherkin, and is often sold as a relish.
How do you make sweet pickle relish from scratch?
Finely chop a cucumber and half an onion, then simmer with 150 ml cider vinegar, 75 g sugar and a teaspoon of mustard seeds for about 15 minutes, until glossy and thick. Cool it, put it in a clean jar and keep it in the fridge; this method is for a refrigerated pickle, not a cupboard-stable preserve.
What goes well with sweet pickle?
Try it in a cheddar sandwich or cheeseburger, with cold ham, or alongside a ploughman’s lunch. A little cuts through rich cheese and meat with a sweet, sharp crunch.
How should you store sweet pickle after opening?
Keep the jar in the fridge and use a clean spoon each time. For homemade sweet pickle, refrigerate it once cool rather than storing it in the cupboard.
What can you use instead of sweet pickle?
For a sandwich, finely chop gherkins and mix them with a little chutney to get a similar tangy crunch and sweetness. Chutney on its own is softer and usually fruitier.
Can you use sweet pickle juice?
Yes: whisk a spoonful into mayonnaise or a simple vinaigrette for sandwiches and coleslaw. Add it gradually, as the brine can be quite sharp and salty.
Is sweet pickle the same as sweet pickle relish?
They are often used for much the same condiment: sweet pickle relish is finely chopped vegetables in a sweet, vinegary dressing. The word “relish” usually signals a particularly spoonable, finely chopped texture.
Is sweet pickle high in sugar and salt?
It is sweet and salty: per 100 g it contains 32 g of sugars and 1700 mg of sodium. A small spoonful gives plenty of flavour without using a large amount.
