Questions about Mixed fruit

How much mixed fruit counts as one of your 5 A Day?

An 80 g portion of fresh mixed fruit counts as one portion. If the mix is dried fruit, a 30 g portion counts instead.

How do you stop cut mixed fruit going brown?

Toss fruit that browns quickly, such as apple or pear, with a little lemon juice as soon as you cut it. Keep it covered in the fridge until you serve it.

How should you store prepared mixed fruit?

Keep it covered in the fridge, ideally at 5°C or below, and use it promptly. Follow the use-by date on a shop-bought pack.

Can you freeze mixed fruit?

Yes. Cut larger fruit into pieces, spread the fruit on a tray to freeze, then transfer it to a freezer bag. Use it frozen in smoothies or cooking; thawed fruit is usually softer.

What goes well with mixed fruit for breakfast?

Spoon it over porridge or plain yoghurt, or serve it with pancakes. Add it just before eating so the fruit stays fresh and the topping doesn’t become watery.

Can you use fresh mixed fruit instead of dried fruit in a cake?

Not as a straight swap: fresh fruit releases more water and can make cake mixture soggy. Dried mixed fruit is the usual choice for a British fruit cake; use fresh fruit in a crumble or fruit salad instead.

Should you wash fruit before making a fruit salad?

If you’re preparing whole fruit, rinse it under cold running water before peeling or cutting. Don’t wash fruit labelled ready to eat.
