Questions about Marmite yeast extract

How much Marmite should you add to gravy?

Start with ½ teaspoon for 500 ml of gravy, stir until it dissolves and taste before adding any salt. Marmite brings plenty of savoury flavour as well as saltiness.

How do you spread Marmite on toast without tearing it?

Spread butter on the toast first, then use the back of a teaspoon to scrape on a thin layer of Marmite. It spreads more easily over warm, buttered toast.

Does Marmite need to go in the fridge after opening?

No. Keep the lid tightly closed and store the jar in a cool, dry cupboard; use a clean knife or spoon to avoid getting crumbs in it.

What goes well with Marmite besides toast?

Try it in a cheese toastie or stirred into mashed potato. A little also adds savoury depth to baked beans, stews and gravy.

What can you use instead of Marmite in a recipe?

Another yeast extract spread is the closest swap. Start with a smaller amount, as saltiness and strength differ; miso can work in soups and sauces but gives a different flavour.

Does Marmite contain gluten?

Yes. Its yeast extract contains barley, so Marmite is not suitable for a gluten-free dish.

Is Marmite vegan?

Standard Marmite is suitable for vegans; it is made with yeast extract rather than animal-derived ingredients.

Which B vitamins is Marmite high in?

Marmite is high in thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, folate and vitamin B6, and also provides vitamin B12. It is usually eaten in a thin scrape, rather than by the 100 g amount used for nutrition figures.
